Lots of businesses don’t have their drains connected to a sewer which means their sewage needs to be taken away for treatment. Lots of venues will have all their commercial sewage running into tanks on their site. Some venues are connected to the sewer, but they need a functioning pump to transport the commercial sewage to the sewer. If the pump breaks down or becomes faulty then this can lead to a build-up of sewage. 

A recent case study of commercial sewage services at Andersons Waste Management is the Thelka music venue/night club. In the harbour of Bristol there is a boat called Thekla which has been converted into a 400 people capacity nightclub. Normally the commercial sewage from their toilets, kitchens and bars goes to tanks within the boat and then this sewage is pumped regularly to the mains sewer. However, the Thekla pump has recently broken down which means their commercial sewage tanks are not draining away and leaving them with a problem. Commercial sewage is not allowed to be tipped into the seas or any other natural water course; it has to be taken to a treatment facility to be properly treated and have the toxins removed. 

Thekla https://www.theklabristol.co.uk/ called up Andersons Waste Management and told us about the problem. Once they had told us all the details, we decided that the Thekla night club needed 1,000 gallons of commercial sewage removed from the venue every day. This would ensure that their tanks always had enough sewage capacity for one night. Consequently, an Andersons Waste Management commercial sewage services tanker goes to the Thekla boat every day and removed 1,000 gallons of sewage. Without this commercial sewage service the Thekla boat would not be able to operate until their sewage pumps have been replaced which would cause jobs to be lost and partygoers to be left disappointed. The commercial sewage removed from the boat is then taken to the Andersons Waste treatment plant to be disposed of in a completely compliant manner. Once the pumps have been replaced there will be no need for a tanker as the commercial sewage will then be pumped into the mains sewer which leads directly to the treatment plant.

Thekla is within the Bristol Clean Air Zone which comes into force on the 25^th November 2022. This means that any tanker lorry coming to remove the sewage should have the very newest engines to ensure carbon dioxide emissions are kept as low as possible. At Andersons Waste Management we always keep our fleet up to date with brand new vehicles, hence we can take our new tankers into the Clean Air Zone and not have to pay any fines. We are at the forefront of the drive to reduce carbon emissions and as soon as there is an opportunity to buy a tanker lorry that produces no carbon dioxide emissions then we will be buying one. Sadly, the technology isn’t quite there yet. The aim is for Andersons Waste Management to be carbon net zero as soon as possible.

Pump chambers / pump stations are often used where waste from a building cannot reach a main sewer sometimes due to gravity or insufficient falls of the drainage. As a result, the waste is directed to a central point which is either a pumping station or wet well.
The station is generally lower than the sewer system, thus a pump is required to direct the waste up towards the main sewer system. Regular emptying/cleaning ensures the systems continue working. On some occasions pumps may fail so urgent emptying is needed, we can arrange this too.
